Nedward Clyde "Buster" Estes Jr., born December 26, 1948 in Dallas, GA. graduated from Matthew's Consolidated High School in 1966 and joined the United States Navy on October 12th of the same year. After basic training and a short ship tour, he volunteered for duty in Vietnam and was ordered to NIOTC for PBR and SERE training. He joined RIVDIV 593, Iron Butterfly, on the upper Saigon River at Phu Cuong in December 1969.

Fireman Estes was with the division for only a short time when he was killed in action January 16, 1970 when PBR-755 which he had been assigned as engineer and M-60 gunner came under heavy attack.

PBR-755 was part of a two-boat patrol on the upper Saigon River during Operation Ready Deck (Tran Hung Dao V), when the patrol came under heavy enemy automatic weapons and rocket attack. Nedward was struck in the chest by a B-40 rocket and killed instantly.

Although with the division only a short time, he had seen considerable Combat and had proven himself a solid reliable member of Charlie Patrol and the Iron Butterfly. Those who served with him have missed him.

His parents, two sisters, and two brothers survive buster. The Estes family resides in Hiram, GA and is in touch with members of Iron Butterfly.
