David L. "Butch" Carter was born on October 19, 1946, in Newport News, VA. Butch joined the Navy in 1963. He attended boot camp at Great Lakes, IL. He spent four years in the Navy and re-enlisted.

He received orders for PBR training at Vallejo, CA, Language School, and SERE training at Coronado, CA. He reported for duty at Nha Be RVN on May 24, 1968 to River Section 544, later changed to River Division 593 as a boat engineer man and Gunner.

Butch served ten years in the Navy and received four Bronze Stars w/Valor, a Purple Heart, Navy Unit Citation, Navy Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, and Presidential Unit Citation.

In civilian life he was employed as an engineer on cruise ships in the Virgin Islands and Dutch West Indies, an engineer on tug boats in Baton Rouge, LA, and for ten years, he was self-employed as a plumber. He sold the business in 1997. He was a member of the VFW.

Butch was married for eighteen years to Mary. He has six stepchildren. Butch was a good friend and is missed by all. He passed away on July 7, 2000.
