Biography

WILLIAM ANDREW "ANDY" WINTERS, born May 17, 1947 in Lanaconing, MD. Enlisted in April 1966 and attended basic training at Great Lakes, IL. Reported to USS Dyess (DD-880) at Newport, RI and received Gun Operation and Maintenance, 5"/38 cal. School. Advanced to GMG3 while on the destroyer. Even though he did not volunteer as many had, he received orders for PBR training at Mare Island, language training at Coronado and SERE training at Warner Springs, CA.

Served with RIVDIV 593, TF116 and USS Hector (AR-7). Assigned to RIVDIV 593 at Nha Be from August 1968-August 1969. Part of Operation Giant Slingshot. Before the end of tour he was sent to Phu Loi and operating out of base camp. He was made boat captain after Giant Slingshot, being the only GMG3, due to heavy losses for his experience in Rung Sat area.

Discharged January 1970 as GMG2. Awarded NDSM, Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal w/Combat V, RVN Service, RVN Campaign, Bronze Star for 252 combat patrols in country and others.

Currently employed as a supervisor with Alliant Tech Systems for over 25 years. Life member, past commander and current finance officer, Post 189 American Legion with 31 years continuous membership. Also, life member VFW Post 5280.

Married to Sharon, he has a stepson Robert Hopkins and daughter, Christine.
