Biography

J. PATRICK MADDEN, born Sept. 28, 1945 was commissioned an ensign, USN June 1967 upon graduation from Brown University, Providence, RI. Following a tour on USS O’Bannon (DD-450), including a deployment to Vietnam, he volunteered for PBRs in 1968 and joined RIVDIV 593 Oct. 3, 1968 as LTJG Madden. Served with RIVDIV 593 until Oct. 3, 1969. Following training under the leadership of RDC Ron Weeks and SMC Bob Monzingo, Madden served as a patrol officer and made over 200 combat patrols.

His Vietnam decorations include two Bronze Stars w/Combat V, Navy Commendation Medal w/Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon, two Presidential Unit Citations, RVN Gallantry Cross Individual Award and RVN Gallantry Cross Unit Award. His best memories are those of the RIVDIV 593 officers and men he served with.

Madden remained in the Navy for 21 years and retired as LCDR. Obtained his master’s degree while teaching NROTC at the University of Washington in Seattle. Post Vietnam assignments included tours on other destroyers, frigates and various staff assignments including COMIDEASTFOR and NATO HQ. His last assignment prior to retirement was on the OPNAV staff in Washington, D.C.
